What’s new in Kazakhstan?

In Kazakhstan, our ‘HIV Research Training Program’ is partnering with Kazakh National Medical University’s School of Public Health (KazNMU SPH) ( https://kaznmu.kz/eng/academic-department-of-public-health/ ) to expand their graduate public health curricula and provide training for their faculty on HIV-focused epidemiology and biostatistics. We are also training KazNMU faculty at the University at Albany School of Public Health in degree, distance learning and certificate programs. We also partner with the Global Health Research Center of Central Asia (GHRCCA) http://ghrcca.columbia.edu/en/ as a site for research opportunities for our trainees.
Epidemiology Course Launch!
In February 2019, KazNMU SPH launched a new epidemiology course, designed to follow the depth and rigor of a graduate-level epidemiology entry course in the US. NYS-ITRP Program organized faculty from SUNY Downstate School of Public Health and University at Albany School of Public Health to train junior faculty on how to teach epidemiology basics. Pictures below include the new course taught to students at KazNMU by our newly trained Kazakh faculty.

From April 2-4 2019, group of delegates from SUNY Albany and Downstate campuses visited Almaty and the capital Nur-Sultan Kazakhstan (recently renamed from Astana) to develop a number of collaborations. The first part of the trip focused on developing a public health undergraduate degree at Kazakh National Medical University (KazNMU) through the support of SUNY Albany. The proposed collaborative degree program at KazNMU will build on curricula and material from SUNY Albany’s public health program, and provide a hybrid experience for Kazakh students with training on KazNMU and Albany campuses. The second half of the trip focused on our further developments in KazNMU faculty training to build the research capacity of their School of Public Health. We plan to have a Research Conference in Almaty in Fall 2019 that focuses on the opioid dependency in people diagnosed with HIV .
April 2, 2019: NYS-ITRP Representatives meet with Kazakh Ministry of Health Officials to discuss collaborative degree programs in Nur-sultan City, Kazakhstan.

In Ukraine, we are partnering with the School of Public Health, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (SPH NaUKMA) http://sph.ukma.edu.ua/school/mahisterska-prohrama-menedzhment-v-ohoroni-zdorovya/health-care-management-masters-programme/ and the research NGO Ukrainian Institute in Public Health Policy (UIPHP) http://www.uiphp.org.ua/en/. We offer 1-year certificate programs with an emphasis on HIV-related epidemiology and implementation science to qualified trainees.
In addition to training individual investigators, we are working with our partners to produce a public health certificate program that meets the demands of current national health reform goals in Ukraine.
